Altamira is built vertically into the hillside. Each of its three floors holds a single bedroom suite, so every group of guests takes the whole house — 3 bedrooms, 3 baths, no shared walls with strangers. A bedroom suite on each level means a private bath and air conditioning wherever you land.

The setting

Vieques, on island time

A small island eight miles off Puerto Rico's east coast — former Navy land turned wildlife refuge, now one of the quietest corners of the Caribbean. Altamira sits up in the hills above it all.

Beaches, mostly to yourself

Much of Vieques is a national wildlife refuge, so its best beaches — Sun Bay, Playa Caracas, La Chiva, black-sand Playa Negra — stay wild and uncrowded. Wild horses wander the roads.

The brightest bioluminescent bay on earth

Mosquito Bay glows brighter than any other bio bay in the world. Paddle out after dark and the water lights up blue-green with every stroke.

Two towns, two moods

Isabel Segunda on the north coast has the ferry dock, the old fort and everyday shops. Esperanza on the south is the slow one — a seafront malecón lined with small restaurants and bars.

Getting here

Fly ~30 minutes from San Juan or Ceiba into Vieques (VQS), or take the passenger ferry across from Ceiba to Isabel Segunda. No big resorts, no traffic lights.
